PaNoLa is a cross-language initiative to build or enhance Constraint-Grammar parsers for the Nordic languages, and to integrate other Nordic languages with the existing Danish VISL teaching site. The project has been funded by the Nordic Council of Ministers and involves several stages (2002-2006). The original project plan (2002-2003) for the major Nordic languages can be read here. It was followed up by a smaller add-on project (2004) and the current project PaNoLa-plus (2005-2006), focusing on smaller and minority languages in the Nordic area (Icelandic, Faeroese, Samic and Greenlandic). This second phase initiated the use of Danish and Norwegian as grammar template systems, while at the same time addressing corpus parallelity issues (cf. project plan), that are also dominant in the related PANORAMA project (2007-2008). The third phase will, if funded, in addition target the languages in the Baltic area (Estonian, Latvian, Lithuanian and Russian).

Administration and central programming is done by VISL staff at ISK, University of Southern Denmark. Research-wise, the PaNoLa project involves a growning number of Nordic institutions (responsible researcher in parenthesis):

  • Institute of Language and Communication, University of Southern Denmark (Eckhard Bick): Danish as well as CGs and treebanks for 6 other languages
  • The Text Laboratory, University of Oslo (Janne Bondi Johannessen): Norwegian CG and teaching treebanks: bokmål and nynorsk
  • Department of Linguistics, Göteborg University (Torbjörn Lager): µTBL-system (corpus-trained automatic CG)
  • Department of Linguistics, Helsinki University (Fred Karlsson): Finnish and Swedish CGs and teaching treebanks
  • Tartu University (Heli Uibo, Kaili Müürisep): Estonian CG and teaching treebank
  • Tromsø University (Trond Trosterud): Sami CG and teaching treebank, morphological TWOL systems for Faroese and Greenlandic
  • The Greenlandic Language Secretariat Oqaasileriffik (Per Langgård): Greenlandic teaching treebank
  • Iceland University of Education (Jóhanna Karlsdottir): Icelandic teaching treebank (currently responsible: Gunnar Hrafn Hrafnbjargarson, Tromsø)
  • University of the Faroe Islands (Zakaris Hansen): Faroese teaching treebank

PaNoLa has organized a number of workshops for project participants:

  • Odense, 19.-21. May 2002
  • Ustaoset, 25.-27. October 2002
  • Reykjavik, 1.-2. June 2003
  • Göteborg, 24.-25. October 2003
  • Odense, 23.-26. October 2004
  • Fefor, 11.-13. Marts 2005
  • (Tallin, 1.-3. April 2005)
  • Thorshavn, 16.-19. September 2005
  • Reykjavik, 5.-7. May 2006
  • Tromsø, 6.-8. October 2006

PaNoLa' goals, history and results were presented at NorFa's General Seminar 2005 in Joensuu (power point).

Some published PaNoLa results are available, for instance in NorFa's yearbooks 2002, 2003 and 2004, as listed below. For further relevant publications, see the individual project participants' homepages.
