Grammatical Analyses

The VISL site provides two basic modes for grammatical analysis: a) you can work with a corpus of pre-analyzed sentences in the various VISL languages or b) you can type in your own text and allow the computer to provide an automatic analysis or parse of your text. In either mode, the grammatical analyses can be viewed in different formats:

  • Slant tree (Java applet)
  • Vertical tree
  • Horizontal tree

In addition, pre-analyzed sentences can be inspected in the

  • Source format

The slant tree mode allows for various options of interactivity. These options include:

  • inspecting the tree in part or in full
  • building your own tree
  • selecting various tree notations
  • receiving computer feedback
  • having the computer "grade" your performance

For more information on grammatical categories used, go to the individual languages' info-sections, or have a look at the VISL Cafeteria of category labels. For an easy Danish language entrance to the sentence analysis teaching section, try the Sentence Lab.

To start a grammatical analysis, click on either "pre-analyzed" or "automatic analysis" above . This will take you to a page where you can select the language you want to work with. But you can also access these pages through the language links in the menu at the left.
